April Report, Cheshire and North Wales Woodturners:-
The evening started by welcoming 5 new members, the club is growing each month, what is encouraging we are seeing more Ladies start to get into the craft of woodturning, and tonight we welcomed probably the most well-known, Emma Cook, aka “The Tiny Turner”.
Who is now the president of the Registered Professional Turners and is just off to the USA to demonstrate in their massive Woodturning Symposium in June, so it was great to see her at our club.
Emma decided she would try something new but also to get more participation by our members.
Tonight we had 46 members present so it was going to be interesting.
To start she explained that it would be a hollow form and unlike Blue Peter did not show one I have done earlier, well only a part of it.
Firstly, she started on what was going to be the base of a small trinket box using both traditional tools and carbide, which was interesting as not often the use of carbide tools are explained by demonstrators, what was important was the explanation of how during the process was the way she would be using jam chucks for the to hold the piece as it was changing.
Before we stopped for tea and biscuits, she showed us what she hoped would be the lid of the trinket box, but suggested to us all that she would try to use ideas that any of our members came up with over the break, success someone suggested a reversable lid, Emma took on the challenge, but before she started, she showed various pieces she had turned before.
Using the base as a Jam Chuck, Emma decided the lid would be an internal fit so reversable lid was possible and the design was evolved. Time was pushing on and we ended up with a Trinke box with a referable lid that was new and a great design.
Thanks Emma for a brilliant evening and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
