Mike Wilson report May 2025
Thursday meeting was a a change from having a demonstrator as Colin Smith who was booked had to cancel for health issues so get back to normal Colin and hope to see you soon.
We decided to have a “hands on ” session as the last months competition was involuted turning and the number of entries in both classes were poor.
The plan was to have a couple of lathes with Mike Wilson & Paul Williams helping with the how to try Involuted turning, unfortunately there was a bad hold upon the A55 which meant Paul could not get through, so we only had one lathe but the evening developed into a more than watching but picking up tips from each other.
Mike had prepared some blanks to show how to look at the grain on the 4 squares then marking, but showing a piece he had done some years ago that he thought at the time was OK but 2 pieces put back the wrong way. So the importance of getting the marking correct in the first instance.
The use of PVA glue with a thin sheet of paper was explained and glue ups, various methods of clamping were explained and, on the demonstration, piece held by 2 plastic ties.
Mark volunteered to start the outside of the turning that had been previously glued up. He had never done involuted before so it was a design out of his head. Once turned Mike showed how to split the 4 sections and reverse and glue up holding with ties.
Graham wanted some advice on use of the skew so Howard spent some time with him perfecting his skills.
After the break Mark returned to the reversed turned glue up and continued with his artistic design.
An evening that was different but enjoyable.
Also, we have been without a Club Secretary for a bit and it was great that Paul Huyton volunteered, thank you Paul.
