The club welcomed back Paul Williams, one of it’s longest serving members who has been absent for a few months after suffering a stroke.
I am glad to say he is on the mend, though it may be some time before he is back turning.

The demonstrator for our September meeting was Rick Dobney.

Rick always brings something different when he visits the club and this time was no different.
Rick demonstrated a lidded vessel done in the viking sunset design and colours as an homage to Nick Agar.
As a personal point of difference Rick added an aluminium finial.
Rick started by preparing the blank, turning it to round between centres and then making chucking points at each end, marking off the cut off point and marking where the lid would be parted.

After putting the piece in the chuck he shaped the outside and prepared it for colouring..

The piece was then masked up and the colours for the main body applied, lightest colour first.
He then turned to the band he had preserved with masking tape to apply the texture which he applied using 4 inch nails that had been shaped at the ends to produce various patterns.
The band was then emphasised using gilt crean to produce the metallic effect and the lid parted off

The box was then hollowed and the lid fitted after it was drilled for the finial.
Rick then started on the finial using a parting tool and a spindle gouge. He used a compund on the tools regularly to prevent them from going dull.
The aluminium cut remarkably easily. On completion Rick polished the finail to 600.
Rick emphasised how sharp the swarf from the aluminium is and to take appropriate measures to avoid cutting yourself.
